A five- year development project aimed at developing women economic activities under an initiative tagged Investing in Women in Nigeria programme will invest 8 million Canadian Dollars to support Small and Medium Enterprises that are run by women in Nigeria.

This was disclosed by the Team Lead of the initiative, Mr Fuad Farouk Umar, during a mandate presentation activity held in Kano to selected women that will serve as gender champions in the state.

The women, according to him, were drawn from public sector. He said the women will also serve as advocates for Women Economic Empowerment as they would be acting and supporting the empowerment of women in their different ministries.

He explained that under the project’s five year duration which is funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund there are 3 significant pillars where the project will be investing 8 million Canadian dollars on.

“The project will invest 8 million Canadian dollars on 13 SMEs and 40 cooperatives all women driven, and we found out that investing alone is not enough, therefore we have also mapped out some areas in technical support. Beneficiaries will have to provide a concept of investment that we will be funding among other recommendations,” he said.

In her address Kano State commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Disabled, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, said the project is timely as it seeks to address the issue of inclusiveness for effective women economic empowerment in the state.
