The Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA) recently held its Annual National Art Exhibition to honour the invaluable contributions of Nigerian diaspora artists and their significant role in positively representing Nigeria on the global stage.
During the celebration, SNA highlighted the undeniable impact that these artists have had in gaining international recognition for Nigerian art, acknowledging that their work has played a crucial part in enhancing the country’s cultural profile abroad.
Among those celebrated was Adaeze Adinnu, a talented artist based in the UK, who has earned accolades for her ability to showcase Nigerian heritage with pride and creativity. Her distinctive artistic voice has made a lasting impression, helping to elevate Nigeria’s image in the international art community.
Additionally, the nomination list included UK-based Justin Jamgbadi, Armstrong Oke and Bemi whose remarkable contributions to the arts while residing outside Nigeria have not gone unnoticed. Both artists exemplify the profound influence that Nigerian diaspora creatives continue to exert, reinforcing the significance of cultural exchange and representation in the arts.
This recognition which recently took place at the art pavilion in Garki, Abuja, spanned an impressive week filled with creativity and engagement. This vibrant event showcased the outstanding works of over 70 talented artists, each representing a rich diversity of styles and mediums. Alongside the art displays, participants had the opportunity to enhance their artistic skills through a dynamic workshop designed to foster learning and creativity.
A highlight of the exhibition was a thought-provoking panel discussion, which served as a platform for artists, critics, and art enthusiasts to exchange valuable ideas and insights regarding contemporary trends in the art world. The event not only celebrated artistic expression but also provided crucial networking opportunities, enabling artists and attendees to forge connections, collaborate, and build relationships within the thriving arts community. Among the awardees, Adaeze Adinnu expressed her gratitude to the SNA for the honour she received. Adaeze also shared her belief that the award will open doors to various opportunities in the UK, promoting collaborations with galleries, as being recognised by the Society of Nigerian Artists is a significant achievement.
During the event, SNA president Muhammad Sulaiman emphasised the importance of recognising the global contributions of Nigerian artists. He highlighted that their excellence should inspire others in the diaspora, affirming that art can serve as a powerful alternative for mass employment, thereby reducing Nigeria’s reliance on oil. The SNA remains committed to providing artists with platforms to market their work and gain international prominence.
Rowland Goyit, the honourable general secretary and curator of SNA, noted that the criteria for artists striving for recognition in the Emerging Diaspora Artists category include consistency, visibility, and a commitment to portraying Nigeria positively.
Ezekiel Udubrae, the vice chairman of Northcentral and chairman of the exhibition organising committee, pointed out the vital role that artists in the diaspora play in advancing the Nigerian arts scene. He advocated for their integration and recognition, stressing that the SNA has made significant strides in the development of both young and established artists.
He concluded by mentioning that throughout the exhibition, numerous discussions, panel talks, and workshops took place, resulting in the creation of remarkable artworks that were featured during the event. This effort demonstrated a commitment to promoting art and fostering collaboration among artists, enhancing the overall artistic landscape.
