The Soil Science Society of Nigeria has commended the federal government for signing into law, the bill establishing the Nigeria Institute of Soil Science passed by the National Assembly recently.

The National President, Soil Science Society of Nigeria, Professor Victor O. Chude, who spoke with journalists in Abuja, commended the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo for signing bill.

“Since soil resources serve as a basis for food security, the international community advocates its sustainable and responsible use through different types of soil governance, hence the step taken by the government is in line with this and is commendable,” he said.

The soil scientist said the institute will help address land degradation challenges in some parts of the nation adding that it will also enhanced food security.

Professor Chude stated that all problems associated with land degradation and soil depletion will be addressed without difficulty now that the bill has become an Act.

The soil expert was optimistic that with the presidential assent to the Nigerian Institute of Soil Science bill, availability of food for Nigerians will now be guaranteed.

It could be recalled that the bill was one of those assented to by the Acting President Yemi Osibanjo recently.
