Akesis Health Nigeria has renovated and upgraded Sokoto Central Medical Store at the cost of N22.8 million.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Country Director, Akesis, Zachary Gwa, noted that the organisation has been providing health commodities and ensuring improvement in the health of the people since 2004 with the support of USAID and other international donors.

“When we came into Nigeria to support HIV/AIDS activities, one of the challenges we found, included infrastructure to store commodities that patients could access which were not in good shape.

“So rather than decide to look for private sector facilities, we decided to boost public sector facilities.

“So we signed MoU with the state to take over their infrastructures which delapidated; we renovated them and brought them to international standard. We now use them to manage the commodity,” he said

Gwa explained that N14.8m was spent on the renovation while a 100 KVA generator was procured at the cost of  N8 million.

The commissioner of Health in the state, Dr. Ali Innami, said

the store was designated as the Northwest zonal store by the federal government, adding that before the renovation, it was in bad condition.

He stated that the renovation came at the right time as the state had just approved the Drugs and Medical Consumable Management Agency.
