Sokoto Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 506 bags of imported rice with a duty paid value of N12.127 million.

The  rice were concealed inside sacks of beans before they were intercepted along Sokoto-Illela road.

The Area Comptroller, Nasir Ahmed said the seizure followed an intelligence  report from their officers.

He said that his men had been trailing the trailers for about two weeks, starting from their point of take off to where they were intercepted.

Ahmed  added that it was a new tricks employed by smugglers using beans as  cover up.

"But whatever tricks they used, we are here to combat them. The ban on rice importation through the land border is still enforced and it is meant to encourage local production of rice, "he stated

Ahmed asserted:"Smugglers should resign and go back to farm. We will continue to support local production of rice by stopping importation."

He appealed to the public to always provide them with tips on the movement of smugglers.
