 Sototo state Education Development Levy Fund has so far reached over N600 million, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has disclosed.

He also said the state government would soon donate N500million to the State Consultative Committee on Education Development headed by Sultan Muhammad Saad Abubakar.

It could be recalled that last year the state government introduced education levy to be deducted from the salaries of civil and public servants in Sokoto state. Civil servants on Grade Levels 1 to 6 were to pay one per cent of their basic salaries, those on Grade Levels 7 to 12, one and a half percent and those on Grade levels 13 to 16, two per cent.

Speaking at   16th Annual General Meeting of the Sokoto State Education Development Trust Fund (SEDTF) held at the weakened, the governor said the money realised by the committee through education levy, indicated commitment by the civil servants to make Sokoto state a role model in the area of education

He recalled that the state government had set up the committee last year to among others find out how best to address the various challenges facing the education sector.

Tambuwal described education as crucial in boosting socioeconomic development in the nation.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad  Abubakar and Chairman of the committee applauded  the state government for its commitment to revamping  education in the state.

He assured that the Consultative Committee would ensure judicious utilization of all funds accruing to it.

The royal father who was represented by the secretary of the committee Abubakar Muhammad Gidadawa said the money so far realised would be used in the construction of blocks of classrooms and toilet facilities among others.

Chairman, Board of Trustees SEDTF, Second Republic President Alhaji Shehu Shagari, said its focus was on enhancing education and economic empowerment of the people of the state.

Alhaji Shagari who was represented by the Madawakin Gwandu, Alhaji Idris Koko, Shagari added that SEDTF’s activities were aimed at complementing the efforts of the government in funding education.

Also speaking, Chairman Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Senator Aliyu Wamakko noted funding of education as a collective responsibility.

He disclosed that Federal Polytechnic, Silame and Federal College of Education, Sabon Birni might soon be established in Sokoto state.
