Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has directed the immediate renovation of former President Shehu Shagari’s residence, which was gutted by fire last week.

The house, located along the Gobirawa area in the state’s metropolis, had been the private residence of the late president until a new one was built for him by the late Military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

The house was being occupied by the relatives of Shagari before they were displaced by the inferno.

Governor Aliyu, who visited the residence at the weekend, described it as a historic house not only to Sokoto but the country as a whole.

“To us, this house is of great historical importance being the first residence of the former Nigeria’s first democratically-elected president.

“It’s like a historical monument to the upcoming generation, therefore, we’ll renovate this house,” Aliyu added.

Governor Aliyu commiserated with the family of the late president over the inferno and prayed to Almighty Allah to prevent the recurrence of the disaster.
