The Sokoto State chapter of the Network for Domestic Election Monitors has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over “threats” to the February 25 and March 11 elections in the state. 

The group, in a letter signed by its representative, Prof Sani Abubakar Yar’sakke Esq, addressed to President Buhari and copied to INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu; Senate President Ahmad Lawan; Chief Justice and Attorney General of the Federal, Abubakar Malami (SAN); among others, said some undemocratic forces in the state were working to manipulate the electoral process in the state.

Prof, Sani lamented that despite Buhari’s appointment of key citizens of the state into his government, the security situation remained a serious threat to credible polls there.

Part of the letter reads, “We passionately appeal to the president and the electoral umpire to ensure that these fifth columnists do not succeed in subverting our collective quest for credible polls.

“The electorate should safeguard their right of franchise by remaining vigilant and resist any attempt at manipulating the process.”
