The Senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Sen. Ibrahim Lamido  has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Sokoto State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissing claims that he is not a member of the party.

The lawmaker made the declaration on Tuesday during an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, describing insinuations about his membership status as “baseless and unfounded.”

“I remain in my party, the APC, as you know, and I have renewed my membership card, which was recently done online. Anyone who says I am not a member of the APC is lying.” he said

The senator said his decision to join the race was informed by the security challenges confronting parts of the state, particularly banditry and rural displacement, which he said require decisive leadership and closer collaboration with federal security agencies and local communities.

“Sokoto State has suffered greatly from insecurity. Our people in the rural areas need protection to return to their farms and livelihoods. We must prioritise security if we are to achieve meaningful development,” he said.

He added that beyond security, his ambition is driven by the need to reposition the state economically through investments in agriculture, youth empowerment and infrastructure maintaining that his aspiration is not about personal ambition but driven by service

Political observers say the senator’s declaration may reshape calculations within the APC in the state ahead of the 2027 polls, as consultations intensify among party stakeholders.
