The Sokoto State Government has stepped up efforts to address the long-standing challenge of inadequate potable water across the state, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has said.

Speaking on Sunday during a public engagement on the proposed 2026 budget, Governor Aliyu disclosed that his administration has completed two of the six major water-supply projects initiated by former Governor Aliyu Wamakko.

He noted that the projects had been abandoned by the previous administration but are now being revived and fast-tracked.

He assured residents that the remaining four water schemes are at advanced stages of completion and would soon be commissioned for public use.

As part of a long-term strategy to ensure an uninterrupted water supply, the state government has awarded contracts for the installation of solar-powered systems on key water-pumping machines.

The initiative, the governor explained, was designed to guarantee a stable power supply for water production and reduce reliance on the national grid.

Governor Aliyu also revealed that the government had consulted leading water-management experts to assess the state’s infrastructure.

Their findings, he said, recommended the replacement of most water-pumping machines due to old age and recurrent breakdowns.

He added that the state would procure modern pumping equipment next year and embark on a comprehensive overhaul of major water facilities.

These interventions, according to the governor, demonstrate his administration’s resolve to permanently address the state’s water crisis and enhance the well-being of residents.

The governor further announced that the state government was set to partner with medical experts from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to improve healthcare delivery.

He also pledged to construct a state-of-the-art stadium that meets international standards and approved the immediate renovation of the A.A. Raji Special School.
