Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has rejected its purported dissolution by the party’s national headquarters, describing the move as unconstitutional and without legal basis.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudu Mohammed, the PDP announced the immediate dissolution of its Sokoto State executive committee.
The party also confirmed the appointment of a 15-member caretaker committee to oversee party affairs in the state, with Hayatu Tafida as chairman and Ahmed S. Pawa as secretary.
Our correspondent reports that the national body did not provide reasons for the decision but political observers have linked the development to internal party alignments, particularly the perceived loyalty of the Sokoto leadership to a former governor of the state.
Reacting to the announcement, the Sokoto State PDP Chairman, Bello Goronyo, dismissed the dissolution as illegal and a violation of the party’s constitution.
“When I saw the statement, I laughed because you cannot simply dissolve an elected executive. It cannot be done in that manner.
“We were duly elected into office, and only a court of law has the authority to remove us. Therefore, we remain the legitimate leaders of the PDP in Sokoto State.” he said
He also acknowledged the ongoing leadership dispute at the national level, which is currently before the Supreme Court, but maintained that the outcome would not affect the tenure of state executives.
