The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has inaugurated a new state executive committee.

The officials emerged at a state congress held in Sokoto and were sworn in by Barrister Fatima Hassan Attahiru.

The exercise was supervised by officials from the party’s national headquarters, representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security agencies.

Leader of the national delegation, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa Kalgo, said the congress was conducted in line with the party’s constitution. He announced the dissolution of the state’s caretaker committee before inaugurating the new executives.

Those elected include Hayatu Tafida as chairman, Maryam Muhammad Kande as vice chairman, Ahmad S. Fawa as secretary, Hadiza Abubakar as women leader, Bello Bashar as treasurer, and Faisal Jibril as organising secretary.

Others are Buhari Sidi Attahiru as publicity secretary, Abdulkadir Umar Gidadawa as youth leader, Murtala Muhammad as auditor, and Farida Muhammad as financial secretary.

Speaking after taking the oath of office, Tafida pledged to work for the unity and growth of the party in the state.

“We have accepted the responsibility entrusted to us and will work tirelessly to strengthen the PDP and advance its objectives,” he said.

The party’s National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, called on members who defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to return to the PDP. He also warned individuals claiming to be the party’s leaders in Sokoto to stop doing so.

“They should close that office. If they refuse, we will allow the law to take its course,” he said, insisting that the group had been dissolved and no longer had the mandate to act on behalf of the party.

Bature further dismissed allegations that the faction was working for the ruling party, saying its focus was on strengthening party structures and preparing for future elections.

“If we were working for another party, why would we be preparing candidates and strengthening our structures ahead of elections?” he asked.

He expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge stronger and perform well in future elections.
