About N11 billion is required to transform 40  basic and secondary schools in Sokoto.

The State Technical Committee on the State of Emergency on Education in Sokoto stated this in its second interim report on the 40 pilot schools selected for modernization.

The committee also earmarked Kadadin Buda secondary school in Gada local government for a total demolition.

Chairman of the committee, Professor Riskuwa Shehu who described  the school constructed in 2013 as a "disaster zone" ,said its structures could collapse at any moment.

 Shehu said  many of the schools were in dare need of urgent attention as they were no longer habitable due to dilapidated structures.

He however urged the state government to ensure quality execution of contracts to avoid making public institution grave yards.

 The committee noted in its report that 96% of the pilot schools lacked national curriculum and education policy while  95℅ of them were lacking time tables, staff duty books, log books and registers.

It added that 90 percent of them were incommunicado while 94 percent didn’t have a weekly record among other essential materials required in conventional schools.

The committee said  597 teachers were required, adding that N10.9 billion was required to renovate and build new structures including staff quarters, hostels as well as provision of facilities in the said schools.

They recommended one teacher to 35 students ratio for the pilot schools which he said 22 of them were located in rural areas and they also comprised pre-primary and schools for special education.

Recieving the report, Governor Tambuwal said the government  was better prepared now for the job and task ahead to transform schools in the state.

Tambuwal added that the state would contact its partners, including foreigners  whom he said were willing to assist in transforming education in the state.
