The Sokoto state government is to spend a whopping N2.4b on the construction of a world class stadium and indoor sports hall as part of efforts to develop sporting activities in the state.

While conducting our reporter round the 11,500 seating capacity stadium, the Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, Bashir Gorau, said when completed, the stadium would be the biggest in the North-West region.

The indoor facility with capacity for 1,000 spectators is sited beside the stadium in the new Games village at the Sokoto new city in Wamakko Local Government Area of the state.

“Sokoto has never had it so good than now. Before Governor Tambuwal came on board, sporting activities were grounded, including even handball where we used to have a comparative advantage.

“We used to represent the country in handball but that glory was lost before this administration. However, we are back representing Nigeria in world championships.

“This is why this government is investing heavily in handball. As a matter of fact, we placed our senior players on fixed salary,” he said

He added that the state was trying to resuscitate para-sports, basketball, and volleyball among others.

Gorau also affirmed that taking Sokoto United FC to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is a thing of priority and would be among his legacies.
