Sokoto, Taraba confirm 14 more cases of COVID-19

The Sokoto State Tasks Force on COVID-19 has confirmed another eight active cases, just as it has so far tested 59 persons while Taraba government said it has confirmed six new cases of the disease in the state on Monday.

Briefing newsmen on the development, the Chairman of the committee and Commissioner of Health in Sokoto State, Dr Ali Inname, said the new cases were connected with the index case in the state.

According to him, 28 people, who had contact with the first case, were tested but only eight were positive.

He explained that all the medical workers that managed the first case while on admission at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, tested negative for COVID-19.

It would be recalled that two cases were earlier reported from the state which include the state chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Muhammad Sani.

An impeccable source said the second case involved a security man attached to the government house, Sokoto.

Inname said that they were able to trace 38 people who came in contact with the second case.

Dr. Inname, meanwhile, directed medical workers to attend to patients with other diseases.

This, he explained, was to prevent a scenario similar to what is happening in Kano where people are dying from other diseases due to lack of attention in the hospital.

On his own part, Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba said that there was no cause for panic over the six confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state.

He said six persons who tested positive were among 130 persons intercepted while trying to enter the state from Lagos, Borno, Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, and Ogun states.

Governor Darius said manpower had been moblized to trace contacts of those who tested positive for the disease.

He said the state has deployed additional manpower and resources to check the spread of the virus in the state, assuring that there was no cause for alarm.

He said all borders in the state remained closed while security agents have been mandated to ensure full enforcement of total lockdown in the state.

As at 11:50pm on 26th April, 1273 confirmed cases of #COVID19 have been reported in Nigeria by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.
