The Sokoto state government said it would redeploy unqualified teachers to ministries and other agencies.
This was disclosed by Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal at the opening ceremony of a three-day capacity building and training workshop for head teachers and Principal of Junior Secondary Schools organized by the Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board in collaboration with National Open University of Nigeria.
The Governor who was granting interview to newsmen said that the state had budgeted millions of naira for the training and retraining of its teachers this year.
According to Tambuwal, all unprofessional teachers in the state would be supported to obtain a minimum of NCE certificate before the 2019 dateline given by the National Teachers Institute (NTI).
Represented by the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Jabbi Kilgori, Tambuwal said that "we will not sack our teachers. We will train and retrain them and those we find untrainable will be redeploy to other places.
"We have earmarked huge amount of money for this purpose in this year budget and we are committed to make this done before the 2019 deadline given by the NTI to penalize unregistered teachers," he added
Tambuwal noted that welfare of teachers was given utmost priority in the state, saying "teachers are paid before other civil servants."
In his remarks, the SUBEB chairman, Bello Danchadi said 3,374 teachers would be trained under the teachers capacity building programme.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Professor, Abdallah Adamu who was represented by the deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Professor Joy Eyisi said the training was packaged to build the capacity of teachers in all ramification of learning in the 21st century.
