A total 1,497 houses in Sokoto have been recommended to be sold to civil servants in the state.

The Sokoto State Government had disclosed intention to sell its houses to civil servants residing in them on owner-occupier basis and had set a committee to ascertain the houses involved and the costs, among others.

Presenting the report to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal at Government House, Sokoto, Chairman of the committee, Bello Abubakar Guiwa, who is also the lands and housing commissioner, noted the locations of the   houses to include Guiwa, Bado, Arkilla, Nasarawa, Runjin Sambo, Eastern and Western GRA areas.

The chairman said the committee advised government to sell 90 percent of the houses at a minimum between N1 million and N6.2 million to ease the burden faced by many of occupants some of whom are retired civil servants.

He added that the committee recommended that priority be given to Sokoto indigenes working in the state civil service or unified local government service of the state and that special consideration should also be given to Sokoto indigenes working in the federal government or non-Sokoto indigenes who are working for the state government.

Responding, Governor Tambuwal said the report would be forwarded to the state executive council for deliberation and approval.

He said proceeds from the sale would be invested in completing new estates under construction in the capital.
