The Nigerian Army has arrested a soldier accused of killing a commercial driver, Yakubu Joshua, at a checkpoint in Akunu, Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Joshua, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), reportedly died after being struck on the head with an AK-47 rifle during an altercation with the soldier.

Eyewitnesses said the driver, who was en route from Akure to Abuja on October 13, had a mechanical fault near the checkpoint, leading to a dispute with passengers demanding a refund. A soldier allegedly intervened and assaulted him.

In a statement, the 32 Artillery Brigade condemned the act, describing it as a violation of the Army’s Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct.

The Brigade’s spokesperson, Major Njoka Irabor, said the soldier would face court-martial and the outcome made public.

Irabor added that the Army covered the victim’s medical expenses and has paid condolence visits to the deceased’s family and the NURTW.

The Brigade also pledged to support the late driver’s family, including funding his burial and ensuring the welfare and education of his children.
