The Immediate past governor of Edo state and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomole, has said that some former Nigerian leaders have turned themselves to ethnic champions instead of becoming nationalists like former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon.
Oshiomole said this on Thursday in Benin during the University of Benin Teaching Hospital’s 46th founder’s day and launching of an endowment fund for the hospital.
“Today, it hurt to see people who had the opportunity to preside over Nigeria as the commander in Chief ended up to be ethnic champions of the part of the country they come from. But Gowon has remained the father of true Nigerians,”.
“I am not wrong to say that of all those who have had the opportunity to govern or presided over Nigeria, there is unanimity among Nigerians that you are the most outstanding Nigerian who not only preach the unity of Nigeria but did practical expression to your commitment that we must go on with one Nigeria,” he said.
Oshiomole who did not mention the name of the ex-leader, said Gowon has resisted the temptation of political affiliation and bias, adding ” this is while you are always at home anywhere you find yourself in the 774 local government in the country. You are hero that we must emulate,”.
In his speech, the Chief Medical Director of UBTH Prof. Darlington Obaseki said the Hospital has been re-positioned to meet the vision and mission of the founding fathers of the Hospital.
He explained that UBTH is launching the endowment fund to be able to carry out treatment like kidney transplant, stem cell transplant, among others treatment and in the process end medical tourism.
According to him, UBTH has qualified personnel to carry out treatment on patients irrespective of the illness, noting that late referral of patient easily led to death of patients.
