SON shuts down Gidauniya bread, inspects other bakeries
The Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has shut down Gidauniya Bread at Dawakin Dakata, Nasarawa Local Government area, Kano State on grounds of operating under unhygienic condition.
The closure was as a result of routine quality assurance inspection in bakeries and other fast food companies in the state by the organization.
Commenting on the closure, Coordinator of Kano/Jigawa office of the organization, Alhaji Yunusa B. Muhammad, said the place was dirty and unbecoming of a food industry.
“The environment is dirty. Where the raw materials are kept is equally untidy. You can imagine the kind of contamination that could happen to the food materials,” he said.
Muhammad said the organization would not allow food industries to produce unhygienic food and sell to unsuspecting consumers, adding that the exercise was to ensure compliance with the federal government policy on fortification of some raw materials used in food and eateries.
“There is a federal government policy on fortification, that vegetables oil, sugar and flour must be fortified with vitamin A, and these are raw materials used for production of these food items.
“We have seen a trend in recent time; unfortified products are being flushed into the market. It is part of our responsibility to ensure that we find a lasting solution to this problem,” he said
Reacting to the closure, Manager of the bakery, Malam Sulaiman Mu’azu pleaded for leniency and assured that he would do everything possible to ensure that the bakery was as tidy as expected and call on other operators to ensure compliance with standards so as to avoid such decisive action.
