A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), SOS Children’s Village, has donated educational materials to pupils of Community Primary School, Ikija in Ijebu-East Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The items donated in collaboration with IUX Nigeria include 150 school bags and lunch bags, lunch boxes, exercise books and writing materials among others.

The National Director of the village, Eghosa Erhumwunse, said the gesture as part of the celebration of children’s day was borne out of the need for children to access quality education even in remote areas.

Represented by the Programmes Officer, Ayodeji Adelopo, the National Director, said the action would go a long way in motivating the pupils and help them achieve their goals.

He said, “Education is a fundamental right of the children and the children in this community are not also left out. “Like we know, the government is the primary duty bearer when it comes to providing access to quality education.

“One of the things that our government owes the children is to ensure that they are able to access education just as they are safe and protected; they are not bullied and their rights are not violated. Also Read – ASUU demands action, threatens nationwide strike.

“We believe that for children to have access to quality education, it goes beyond coming to school, they need to have materials and resources required to receive lessons and to carry their items to school.

“One thing we can give to a child and nobody will take from them is quality education which puts them on a pedestal for a bright future,” Erhumwunse said.

The Head Teacher of the school, Mrs Grace Oyewole, thanked the donor “for standing in the gap for the less privileged to ensure they have access to basic educational needs.”

She however, listed some other needs the school lacked to include a sick bay, mower, laptop, drum and football kits.
