He stated this yesterday while talking with Daily Trust on phone saying, the exotic livestock has a gestation period of six months and that made it possible for it to give birth twice in a year.
Dr. Musa also said that the Doper has more meat compared to the local breed and that the “Doper has better flesh ratio to bone.”
A two-year-old Doper could weigh as much as 100 kilogrammes whereas the local stock of same age cannot weight more than 80 kilogrammes.
For the Kalahari and Boer goats,also imported from South Africa, the former could weigh as much as 150 kilogrammes while the latter could weight about 100 kilogrammes, adding that the major difference between the two is that Kalahari is mainly for breeding while Boer is essentially for milk production, he said.
He added that Kalahari has high probability of birthing twins because Kalahari can born as many as six in five months whereas the Boer could only bear three to four within the same period.
