Southern Kaduna People display their culture at the event in Abuja at the weekend

Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) at the weekend performed its annual Cultural Festival in Abuja where it showcased cultural tourism potentialities of the region.

Each of the dozens of ethnic groups in the region presented its unique and distinct cultural identity in music, dance and culinary.

Chairman of SOKAPU, FCT Chapter, Mr. David Dogo, said the annual festival was a platform to demonstrate and celebrate the rich culture of the people, while taking time to address the issues confronting the people and the region with a view to finding ways to tackle the challenges and further develop the region.

Dogo stressed on the need for Nigerians in diaspora to organise cultural festivals to promote native languages.

“We have a very rich culture; if you don’t celebrate your culture, there is no way to sustain it for the generation coming after us to know our values. We will see how we can promote our culture in the Diaspora.”

He said most of the tribes in the region were working towards developing their languages and putting them in writing.

Dogo appealed to people living in and outside the region to promote peaceful coexistence and choose good political leaders in the 2019 elections.

SOKAPU Vice Chairman FCT Chapter, Mr. Jeremiah Peters, said culture remained a viable platform for unity and sustainable development. He said a number of people were empowered and given job opportunities by the union.

“We are here to celebrate culture and use this platform to provide job opportunities and financial support to small businesses,” he said.
