The Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria, Abbas Tajudeen, has requested assistance from the United States Government to help tackle corruption and insecurity in Nigeria.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi on Wednesday, said the Speaker made the call when a delegation from the US Embassy in Nigeria, led by the Chargé d’Affaires, Mr David Greene, visited him.

He described the US as Nigeria’s strongest economic partner saying that, Nigeria is one of the few African countries that have adopted American-style democracy.

He expressed gratitude for the support given by the US to Nigeria through development partners and agencies and urged them to do more to help combat corruption, banditry, Boko Haram, and other security challenges.

Speaker Abbas informed that parliamentary friendship groups were established after their inauguration to deepen democracy in the 10th National Assembly.

He said: “It may interest you to know that in furtherance of our resolve to deepen democracy within the 10th National Assembly, we saw it expedient at the beginning of our inauguration to come up with parliamentary friendship groups, of which America happens to be the number one country that we identified that our legislators need to partner and collaborate with so that we can share ideas and learn from each other.

The Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. David Greene, commiserated with the Speaker on recent accidental bombings of civilians by the military in Kaduna State and emphasized the importance of deepening ties between both countries.

He noted that the two countries share many things in common such as being great Federal Republics that believe in democratic processes and representative government.

He stressed that it is very important for the two countries to cooperate and work together on issues concerning them.
