Speakership: Women group launches campaign for Onyejeocha

The Advocates for Women Inclusion in Leadership (AWIL) has launched a “special campaign” for Nkiru Onyejeocha, representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State, House of Representatives as Speaker.

AWIL Convener, Ndi Kato, told newsmen in Abuja that fairness, competence and not zoning should be the criteria for the election of the next Speaker of the 9th Assembly.

She said Onyejeocha was the most qualified and had carved her political career on exemplary headship, as her leadership of the House Committee on Aviation in 2011, ushered in very visible reforms in the aviation sector.

She contended that as a fourth term lawmaker and as the Chairperson of the Committee on Women in Parliament, Onyejeocha mobilized other women to push issues of gender, children and the under-privileged.

Kato said Onyejeocha sponsored a bill codifying punishments for perpetrators of torture, cruel and inhuman treatment of fellow citizens.
