The agency has always clamoured, oftentimes gutturally, for competent staff of impeccable character to collect or supervise the collection of every legally collectable electricity tariff to the last dime. However, to the chagrin of all concerned patriotic citizens in both PHCN and the larger Nigerian society, such staff are now being fished out and thrown out of service in the most ridiculous fashion without any justification whatsoever.
In PHCN, the most-needed staffs become the most-reviled and the most-edged-out of the system.
The PHCN is now (did I hear you say, ‘has always been?’) an abode where a demoralising huge cabal of top management staff, with the instruments of their like-minded subordinates have hijacked service with a very mischievous and complex method of administration so that the relatively few honest staff there work with the perpetual feeling of irrelevance, working with their hearts in their mouths, waiting to be booted out of the system at the slightest opportunity, because they are virtually listed and encircled as misfits.
With preparations for the sale of PHCN, according to the deregulation policies of the country’s economy, now in top gear, a huge chunk of the workforce there is to be retired in compliance with government directives. Already, according to news media reports, government has provided N200 Billion for the payment of retirement benefits to the affected staff.
Aha! The very formidable and complex anti-country’s- economy cabal there has found the solid opportunity it has been searching for to lean on to force out honest key staff, however high their degree of competence and however needed they are by this vital MDA in spite of the imperative for the retirement gale, by including them on the list of those to be compulsorily retired, without any justification, because they have been solid obstacles on the way of perpetrating administrative misdemeanours.
Just one glaring case is that of Alhaji A A Tafida, General Manager (Marketing and Customer Services) at the Corporate Headquarters of the electric power generation and distribution agency, Maitama, Abuja.
What a devastating paradox!
Government and all other concerned authorities and stakeholders should beam extensive searchlight on the issue of the planned mass staff retirement in PHCN with a view to properly monitoring the exercise to ensure that the cabal in firm grip of the agency does not use it as a weapon against such patriotic, competent, committed and honest staff like Tafida to compulsorily retire them solely because they are solid obstacles on the way of administrative and financial misdemeanours.
