A committee of the ongoing National Conference in Abuja had recommended the transfer of labour matters from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent one.
The zone, which held its Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) meeting recently at Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil  said delegates in support of the move are “out to use labour to cause crisis in the country for their selfish interest and the interest of their sponsors through monetary inducements.”
It added that though it sees the National Conference as an avenue to strengthen the unity of the country, some of the delegates need to be reeducated on the importance of having a national benchmark for minimum wage which no employer can go below.
“In the spirit of best practices worldwide, the National Conference is enjoined to limit itself to issues that will strengthen the unity of Nigeria rather than dissipating energy to destroy existing structures that bind us together.
“SSANU Northern zone therefore throws its weight behind the position of the labour leaders in the National Conference and urge them not to relent in their current effort to ensure that labour issues remain in the Exclusive Legislative List,” it says.
In a communiqué signed by SSANU’s National Vice President and Northern Zone Chairman Comrade Solomon Alfa, the union noted that organized labour remains the backbone of the nation’s economy and development and “wonders why such an ugly idea should ever be conceived by anyone that claims to mean well for this country.”
