The vice president SSANU (North), Mr. Solomon Alfa, gave the warning while addressing journalists recently at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Alfa said the implementation of such a directive would not only run contrary to the purpose of the universities, but would undermine the prevailing industrial peace in the Nigerian university system and compromise its stability.
He said: “The circular from the federal ministry and its attachment in relation to the Nigerian universities system are repugnant and offensive to the background, history, establishment and mandates of educational institutions in Nigeria and all over the world.”
The vice president noted that SSANU is of the opinion that the principles of equity, fairness and justice demand that it would not be out of place if children of university workers are allowed the same privileges of attending schools funded from the treasury as obtainable in other places.
“Rather than focusing on staff school teachers, managers of our universities should be made to be more transparent in the management of their resources,” he advised.
According to him, having engaged the government in one of its most prolonged negotiations which culminated in the signing of the 2009 Agreement, SSANU would defend the sanctity of every part of the agreement with everything within its powers, including protests and other measures of industrial action.
