The coordinator of Civil Society for Scaling-up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN), Anambra State chapter, Dr. Moses Ohamaeme, said Anambra had the highest rate of malnutrition among children under five years old in the South-East geo-political zone despite abundant human and material resources.
He said the percentage of stunting among children under 5 years in Anambra stood at 18 per cent or 193,032, while wasting is 17 per cent or 182,308, according to the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey 2013.
These were contained in his lecture presented recently at a one-day dialogue for scaling up nutrition in Anambra, with the theme: “Adoption and Implementation of the National Strategic Plan of Action on Nutrition (NSPAN),” organised by CS-SUNN, in collaboration with the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria, Anambra chapter.
Ohamaeme said the policy dialogue was aimed at scaling up nutrition among children in the state in order to reduce this data to World Health Organisation’s figure of 0.5 percent and create awareness on the silent crisis of malnutrition in the state.
Ohamaeme urged mothers to breastfeed their children for at least one year to encourage healthy living and ensure that families live in hygienic environments.
