Blockchain and artificial intelligence; once considered the domain of Silicon Valley engineers and global tech giants, are finding fertile ground on the continent, driven by a new generation of community builders who understand that technology without access is just noise. Adam Saheed is one such builder. As a Business Development and Community Growth professional with deep roots in Nigeria’s blockchain and fintech ecosystems, Saheed has made it his mission to bring these transformative technologies closer to the people who need them most. That mission was on full display at the Blockchain Nigeria Users Group (BNUG) annual conference held on August 25 and 26, 2023, at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Themed Decentralized Intelligence: A Web3 and AI Summit, the event was arguably one of the most ambitious gatherings in Nigeria’s blockchain calendar that year. Organised by BNUG and powered by the Celo Foundation through its CeloAfricaDAO initiative; a platform to which Saheed serves as a Core Contributor, the summit brought together blockchain developers, AI researchers, policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs under one roof to examine the converging frontiers of Web3 and artificial intelligence. It was precisely the kind of high-stakes, high-impact event that Saheed has built his career around facilitating.
Speaking as a main stage speaker, Saheed addressed an audience hungry for practical insight into how decentralised systems and AI could be harnessed together to drive innovation across Africa. His address drew on years of hands-on experience: from building one of Nigeria’s largest crypto exchange communities during his time as Community Manager and Business Development Lead at HTX, to leading the ambassador program and regional growth campaigns at HaloFi as Growth Manager, work that produced measurable results in user acquisition and transaction activity across the continent.
The summit’s programme was rich and forward-looking. Session tracks explored the ethical dimensions of deploying AI within decentralised environments, examining issues of bias, fairness, and accountability that often go unaddressed in the rush to innovate. Other sessions tackled the stubborn technical challenges of scalability and interoperability; how decentralised systems can grow and communicate with one another without fracturing into isolated silos. Practical use cases were also front and centre: from AI-powered fraud detection systems capable of identifying identity theft, credit card fraud, and money laundering in real time, to intelligent chatbots and virtual assistants reshaping customer service in fintech.
Attendees also received in-depth exposure to the latest developments in machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, with particular attention to how these tools could be applied in decentralised environments. Sessions on decentralised finance, prediction markets, and autonomous organisations gave both seasoned practitioners and newcomers a clearer picture of where the industry is heading.
For Saheed, the event was more than a speaking opportunity; it was a demonstration of the ecosystem-building work he has championed as a Core Contributor to the Celo Africa DAO. Through BNUG’s partnership with the Celo Foundation, the summit served as a direct pipeline for expanding Celo’s footprint in Nigeria, introducing developers and entrepreneurs to the platform’s tools and possibilities. Saheed’s role in campus adoption initiatives and developer engagement across African universities gave him a unique perspective on the talent pipeline that events like this help to nurture.
The impact of the summit was felt well beyond the auditorium. Events of this nature, at their best, shift the conversation; from passive curiosity about blockchain and AI to active participation in building the infrastructure of the future. For Nigeria, a country with one of the largest developer communities on the continent and an increasingly sophisticated fintech sector, that shift cannot come soon enough.
