Stakeholders tasked on counterfeit drugs, products

The call was made at a national sensitization workshop organized by the National Agency for Food & Drug Administration (NAFDAC)and Christabels Int’l in Abuja at the weekend.
Patron of Christabels, Christabel Julie Okoye, at the event, said NAFDAC under the leadership of Dr. Paul Orhii was working towards creating greater deterrence to counterfeiters of drug.
She said NAFDAC in this regard has reviewed its laws with a view to making the penalties stiffer and ensuring that the businesses of fake drugs and substandard products become extremely cumbersome and expensive.
In the draft bill, Okoye said, NAFDAC has proposed life sentence, confiscation of assets of offenders and use of the proceeds to compensate victims.
In his remarks, NAFDAC’s DG, represented by Dr. Abubakar Jimoh, said the agency has come to realize that stakeholders are a very strong coalition who can act as a counterforce against drug counterfeiting.
In his submission, National President of National Association of Patent and Proprietry Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED, Vincent Mamah said that patent medicine vendors association has always voiced its discontentment with regulatory agencies in respect of unfair enforcement of licensing rules.
