Stakeholders have said Information Technology (IT) curriculum and teacher training should be improved to meet the industry demand and prepare learners for jobs of the future.

They made the appeal at the conference of the Academia in Information Technology Profession (AITP) held at Baze University, Abuja.

In the conference entitled `Information Technology for Promotion of Quality Education Research and Local Content Development’, the Director General of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, said the agency was working on developing a viable curriculum for IT education at all levels.

Represented by the Deputy Director, Corporate Planning and Strategy Development, Mr Ben Ewa, Dr Pantami said NITDA is interested in fostering viable and sustainable education ecosystem.

According to him, there is insufficiency of digital content from the primary to tertiary levels.

He said IT education in the country required an interactive curriculum, including software devices.

Professor Charles Uwadia, president, Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) said there was need to improve teachers’ competencies.

He said, “CPN decided that we will upgrade curriculum every two years. Upgrading curriculum is not sufficient, when you upgrade your curriculum, you would need to improve the skills of those who are going to implement the curriculum,” he said.
