The Chief Judge (CJ) of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice I.U. Bello, says collation of old cases in Suleja prison will begin, following commissioning of a new magistrate court in Zuba.
Bello said that the construction of the three new magistrate courts in Zuba, Lugbe and Mpape areas of the city was an indication that the judiciary was responding to the increase in population in the FCT.
He said that while the executive was providing houses and other social amenities for the society, the judiciary was also doing its part to bring courts closer to the community to speed adjudication.
He said that while the proximity of the court in Zuba to Suleja prison would ease logistic problem, "collation of old cases in Suleja prison and cases in Zuba will be done immediately" to decongest the prison.
He added that “chief magistrates have been appointed to ensure that all grounds are well covered for proceedings to commence immediately.”
The Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Bello, represented by the acting Solicitor-General of the FCT, Yusuf H. Wodi, while commissioning the Zuba Magistrate Court, said that the pragmatic efforts of the FCT Judiciary in bringing courts closer to the people was laudable.
A former attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim (SAN), who commissioned the magistrate court in Mpape, said that it was worthy of note that more physical infrastructure were established in the FCT Judiciary to aid the judicial process, adding: “More commendable is the revelation by the CJ that necessary manpower for this new courts are ready to commence work.”
Speaking, the CJ said that he realised the need for more magistrate courts in some areas, adding that before the end of the year, Karu/Nyanya division of magistrate court would be commissioned.
In a related development, the CJ named the court complex under construction in Wuse Zone 5 after the pioneer judge of the FCT, Justice Dahiru Saleh.
At the beginning of the construction, the CJ said that the contribution of Saleh to the development of the judiciary was the reason why the complex was named after him.
