Start using hijab in schools, Ogun Imams tell female Muslim students

The controversy over the use of hijab in mission schools in Kwara State has been long running

The League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun state has asked desiring and willing female Muslim students to start using hijab in the state’s public schools from January 9, when schools resume for the second term.

They said the declaration on the use of hijab in public schools followed a recent meeting they had with the state government on the subject matter.

The league, in a statement by its Secretary General, Sheikh Tajudeen Adewunmi, said no law in the state prevents female students from using hijab in schools.

It also said the recent Supreme Court’s judgment affirming the use of hijab in schools has put to rest all controversies on the matter.

Why more Muslims should involve in politics – clerics

The statement said, “Many female Muslim students in Nigeria, and Ogun State in particular have continued to feature unnecessarily in many protracted cases of infringements on their rights in their quest to practice their religion, especially as regards the use of hijab in schools.

“However, all doubts or controversies on the matter have been put to rest by the pronouncement of the Honourable Justices of the Supreme Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which reaffirmed the rights of Muslim students in Nigerian Schools to use hijab as they so wished.

“It should also be put on record that many agencies of the Ogun state government have always expressed that there is no law whatsoever that prevented female Muslim students from the use of hijab even though Muslim students who put on hijab have always been beaten, embarrassed or/and humiliated in many ways over the years.”

The league, therefore, urged the state government to warn teachers and school heads to desist from assaulting female Muslim students for using hijab in schools.

MSSN laments continued harassment of students

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has lamented that the harassment of female Muslim students over the use of hijab had persisted in some parts of the country despite the apex court judgment on the matter.

While urging concerned authorities to take decisive measures against violators of hijab rights, the body appealed to the Muslim Ummah to adopt all legal measures possible against any infringement on the freedom and religious rights of Muslim sisters.

MSSN made the call in a communique jointly signed by its national chairman and secretary, Muhammad bin Isa and Auwal Yunus respectively issued at the end of its 79th National Islamic Vacation Course (NIVC) held in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

The body also called for urgent investment by Muslims in the areas of Islamised digitalisation and ICT content.

This, it noted, has become necessary to preserve the future generation in the fast-developing world of technology.

It described as disgraceful “the level of decadence in the Tarbiyah or good manners among the general ummah adding that Western civilization and the craving for mobile phone acquisition have a negative societal influence on children’s upbringing.

The week-long event featured intensive training, da’wah outreach, seminars, panel discussions, and mentoring sessions among others.
