The suspect who gave multiple names was caught by a student, who saw him pull out a phone stealthily from a student’s pocket in the class.
Luck ran out of the thief when he returned to the class pretending that he was there to read.
The student that saw him hiding the phone then raised an alarm but the suspect denied taking any phone.
However, during interrogation, the suspect gave his name as John, while the book which he was reading had the name of ‘Chukwudi’ on it.
Drama however ensued when he also gave conflicting course of study. Initially he said he was from the department of mathematics but when asked by one of the security officers that saved him from being lynched by students, he said he was studying accounting.  
After few minutes of further interrogation he then said he was from the department of ‘engineering mathematics’. This made the crowd to suspect that he was not a student but had come around to steal because there was no such department as of ‘engineering mathematics’ in UNIBEN.
Stealing on campuses at UniBen is usually done at night when students are asleep. It is also done at night classes where students go to read; some students eventually sleep off leaving their valuables at the mercy of these pilferers.
Campus theft is so rampant these days that students complain of losing either phones, laptops, electronics, clothes, hand bags, buckets, food item, money and even textbooks virtually on daily basis.
The Chief of General Staff (CGS) of Man O War club in the university, Mr. Isaiah Osifoh said members of the club were deployed to hostels and other strategic places in the university to protect lives and properties of both staff and students.
On how to curb this menace, some students suggested that parents should provide enough for their children to avoid difficulties in feeding which may push students to stealing.
They also advised students to always put their lockers in the hostel under lock and key whenever they are not around and that squatting among students in hostels should be discouraged.
