Nigeria international and 2018 CHAN silver medallist, Stephen Eze, has expressed confidence in the ability of the home-based Super Eagles to win the 2024 CHAN, by the time the tournament will be played in August.
The 2024 CHAN tournament was scheduled to take place in
Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from February 1 to 28, 2025, but the Confederation of African Football had to postpone the tournament again till August.
In a chat with newsmen, Eze, who played at two editions of the tournament in 2014 and 2018 praised the team’s preparations and squad depth before the postponement, stating that they have what it takes to lift the trophy but must reconverge as quickly as possible before the new date.
“I followed the team’s preparations and I was impressed with the plan,” Eze said.
“If not for the postponement, the coaching crew did a great job in selecting a balanced squad, and I believe they have the quality to go all the way.
“All they have to do now is open camp again as soon as the NPFL season ends. Maybe give the players like two weeks break then let them go back to camp ahead of the new date in August.”
After beating Ghana in the qualifiers, the home-based Eagles had about three weeks intensive training in Ikenne, fine-tuning their tactics and building team chemistry ahead of the tournament.
The Jamshedpur FC defender, advised the team to stay focused and take it one game at a time.
“My advice to the team is to stay humble and focused,” he said.
“The coaches now have the chance to select players who impress during the season. If they can stay disciplined, most of them that have been around will come back into the squad.”
The home-based Eagles will be facing Senegal, Congo, Sudan in the group stage of the 2024 African Nations Championship.
