A very humane and generous gentleman I am told was Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai, the Executive Governor of Taraba State who almost two years ago was involved in an unfortunate air crash and survived with injuries that we are told was fatal. In fact it is a record-breaking scenario hardly recorded that people survive air crashes.
God in his mercy does things in Godly manner and Mr. Suntai along with virtually all his passengers survived and in his own case, he has been receiving medical attention, first in the United States and recently in United Kingdom, all battling to save his life. I pray God to heal him as soon as possible so that he resumes his responsibility and live to enjoy the hard work of service, which he has put for several years while he was healthy.
The drama in Taraba is not different from what we experienced in 2009 until 2010 when Umaru Yar’adua, Nigeria’s president of that moment passed away. A group shielded Yar’adua from the nation and even senior officers of government, Dora Akunyilli referred to the group as the ‘cabal’. Even his vice, Goodluck Jonathan wasn’t in the picture of the true health status of his principal, the president. All this is now history as the matter was settled both constitutionally and naturally.
In the case of the TARABA state governor, THERE SEEM TO BE ANOTHER CABAL that is denying the state and the nation, a natural and constitutional privileges of knowing the health status of a principal political personality of the rank of a governor. There are just 36 of them within the Nigerian federation and they represent the flag bearers of the nation’s politics, administration and governance.
On the Taraba saga, the governor was initially follown to the US and later hurriedly returned to the country for selfish political ends of some individuals who desire to perpetuate in the allocation of the resources of the state even when he wasn’t recuperated. He was here for about 10 months until he was flown back to England when the matter got worst. On return from America, those who seem unsympathetic to the plight of this gentleman began to play proxy issuing orders and instructions falsely as emanating from the ailing governor until it was very visible that Mr. Sunatai wasn’t in the right frame of senses to administer the government of Taraba and a hybrid solution was fabricated by the PDP in Abuja under the leadership of Bamanga Tukur came up.
The resolution as watery as it was provided that the Ag Governor has the right to continue acting but must consult with governor on all major decisions. It was clear the governor wasn’t okay and had to be flown out for another round of treatment in England. The latest drama was unveiled this week when in the same manner the governor was bundled back into the country several months ago was returned this time with little media bliss but in similar circumstances where the Ag Governor was deliberately refused access to his boss. This was clearly shown on television stations.
What possibly could be the reasons for people mostly outside of government preventing a lawful principal officer who has ran the state for almost two years since the unfortunate crash from seeing his boss whose knowledge and confidence on this character made him to nominate him for the position of a deputy after the removal from office of the incumbent?
The Taraba story makes a lot of issues to me. Governor Suntai has had a running battle with his deputy and thus caused the state Assembly to impeach him. Soon after he forwarded the name of Garba Umar as a replacement. He was promptly approved by the legislature and within 30 days the governor was involved in that unfortunate crash.
It will appear that truly there are some people who are still so backward and believe that possibly by the faith of the Ag governor, he can never be the governor. Whether we like it or not, and no matter how much we desire to cover up, the handwriting is very clear and what it is simply saying is that a Muslim cannot be governor in a state where the population configuration is a subject of disputation by the elites of the state.
This is intellectual and political barbarism because all or most of those at the center of the controversies are either well-read or experienced high profile politicians yet acting like non-starters doing everything possibly necessary to display their backwardness and ungodliness.
They are ill prepared to subordinate themselves to the will of God and the provisions of the constitution and yet they call themselves worshippers and claim they are working for faith and God. They call themselves democrats and they are unwilling to accept and practice the constitution, as it should. This is unfortunate and clear statement on why Nigeria is the way it is.
Millions of citizens who shouted on top of their voices during the Yar’adua saga are now mute or even unfortunately justifying this shadow dancing from the Taraba political elite. I think the position to take is simple and must be in the interest of the system and the country. Any further attempt at cover up will mean the mutilation of the system that is fragile.
If the cabal would not let the governor recuperate to the level that he could take over his roles and responsibilities just because they want to remain relevant and take decisions in proxy, the state Assembly must respond to the resolution of the Executive Council by instituting a medical team that would ascertain the suitability and capacity of the governor to lead. This is an unfortunate way to go because Mr. Suntai does not deserve this punishment from those who claim they love him and their state.
The nation must rise in unison and condemn these antics and tell loudly those who are staging this drama of shame to respect life and its sanctity. To have patience on patients and allow the governor of Taraba state Mr. Suntai continue his medical treatment and insulate him from this dirty politics they are playing.
Nigerians must talk. That is the only way the ship of democracy can sail in these dangerous waters of Nigerian politics.
