The Managing Director of Eko Electricity Distribution Company, George Etomi, has urged Nigerians to drop the belief that the game of golf is meant for only elites in the society.

Speaking at the award ceremony of the maiden NESI golf tournament in Abuja, Etomi said the game has seen caddies turn to professionals, thus, providing fair opportunities to those that play the game.

While stating that the golf provides a means for networking for players, he said the NESI golf tournament was initiated to provide synergy among players in the electricity sector.

“Nigerians should not live with the impression that golf is an elitist sport. So many so called non elites play the game and a lot of the caddies have turned professionals.

“This sport supports a lot of activities. To every golfer, there is a caddy and other people and they form the fulcrum of those who convert to pro. Where better it is to meet people who can help you in life. Life is all about interaction, comradeship and networking, sport is a leveller. I can be playing golf with anybody and it makes no difference.”

On the connection between the game and the electricity sector, he said “This is a tournament that brought the whole value chain. Events like this enable us to come together. Those who participate in the sector work in silo and due to the charged atmosphere, we may not find the chance to meet one another.”
