The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) yesterday identified proliferation of professional bodies as a major challenge confronting the institute and asked the Federal Government to stop further registration.

The 61st ICAN President, Dr. Haruna Yahaya, said this in Lagos, at a press conference organised as part of the activities marking the 60th anniversary of the institute.

“The most important challenge we face is the proliferation of professional bodies. It’s a great challenge to the institute and it’s going to be a disservice for us if we don’t speak against it.

“We will try to maintain our own standards and we call on the government to stop the proliferation of registering professional bodies,” Yahaya said. He said the ICAN has continued to ensure its members uphold principles of accuracy and integrity in their dealings because “we cannot and we will never lower our standards.”

 

 

 

The 61st President said evidence of ICAN’s impact on the nation’s development in the last six decades “is unmistakable”, noting that members of the institute “are architects of accountability, partners in governance, and champions of transparency.”

 

 

 

He said “On the law enforcement and justice front, we are a pillar for National Regulations and Anti-corruption.

 

 

 

“We have established collaborations with anti-corruption agencies in fighting corruption in Nigeria. We also have a joint certification programme with the Nigerian Police Academy on forensic accounting training which is a powerful weapon against corruption.”

 

 

 

Yahaya said the ICAN has begun an initiative to engage the Genz by catching them young initiative as the next generation of chartered accountants.
