The Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has asked the federal government to stop short-changing retirees in the country.

Wamakko’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Bashir Rabe Mani said the Senator stated this at the opening of a public hearing by the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service on the Pension Act 2004 Amendment.

"It is absolutely an injustice to deprive a pensioner what has accrued to him at a time he or she is in dire need to solve pressing health and family challenges,” Wamakko said.

The former Governor noted with concern that the retirees who had put their youthful energies in public service were made to face such situation.

He urged stakeholders, particularly Pension Funds’ Administrators to be proactive and professional in dealing with retirees’ benefits in line with global best practices.

Wamakko had sponsored a bill to further amend the Pension Act, 2014 to provide for a definite percentage a retiree can withdraw immediately from his or her retirement savings account and for other matters related thereto, among others.
