Parents of public primary and secondary schools in the FCT have expressed concern over the ongoing strike by teachers. This is coming when the striking teachers are insisting that the action will continue today. 

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the FCT, Comrade Stephen Knabayi, said the union would not call off the strike because there were no signs of commitment from the six area council chairmen about the payment of their promotion arrears.

Com Knabayi said, “All we received was a letter of commitment from ALGON that they would start some payment from December’s allocation, instead of November’s allocation, which shows that there is no any serious commitment from them, as it’s just a political statement.”

A parent, Abdullahi Usman, said, “Honestly, this is not the right time for teachers to embark on strike, but the government should be blamed for the strike because they don’t care about the teachers’ welfare.”

Another parent, Mrs Florence Adegbite, said it was unfortunate that the government had allowed public schools to remain closed, noting that keeping the children at home because of the strike would affect the academic calendar of schools in the FCT.

Also, the Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) in the FCT, Alhaji Usman Abubakar, expressed concern over the strike action and appealed to the six area council chairmen and the FCT Administration (FCTA) to urgently address the demands of the teachers to enable pupils go back to school.
