The dons made the appeal, against the backdrop of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
 The Vice Chancellor, Redeemers University, Ogun State, Prof Debo Adeyewa, said the constant strikes by university teachers are detrimental to the development of education in Nigeria.
Adeyewa called on stakeholders to play their roles in ensuring the delivery of quality education.
 “Until we give education the rightful priority in this country, we will continue to have the crisis that we are having. The federal and state governments should also invest in education.
 “And we must come to the point where education is not monopolized by anyone, but everyone should play his or her part to ensure that education is acceptable and qualitative.”
 On his part, a professor of History at the University of Lagos, Jide Osuntokun, said that strikes were not an ideal way of presenting grievances.
He, therefore, called for dialogue as a way of channeling grievances to the government.
“Strike has destroyed the university system in Nigeria and nobody respects our degrees outside the country because they know that we are always going on strike.
“You can negotiate for better salaries or better rewards rather than going on strike at every stroke of the pen, it is not good for the system.”
Also speaking, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, Director, Academic Planning, University of Lagos (UNILAG), called on governments at all levels to make the development of the education sector a priority project to end the crisis in the system. (NAN)
