Court staff under the Judiciary Workers Association of Nigeria,  Cross River State chapter, have been on strike for over eight months owing to many grievances, including demand financial autonomy and independence from judiciary branch of government.
Chairman of the association in the state, Mr Asanya Ebong, said that they believe that the new governor is a humane and pragmatic leader who would see reason for judicial administration, including staff welfare to enable them function freely in the state.
 He said he was grateful to Governor Ayade for composing a committee to look into their demands but that it was important to stress that having conceded much already, the workers would no longer shift ground and were prepared to further elongate their strike if their demands were not met. Reacting on this issue, a prominent lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Okoi Obon-Obla said, “one would have expected Governor Ayade to tackle this knotty matter as soon as he assumed office, yet there is no glimmer of hope that he intends to accede to the demands of these judiciary workers so that our courts can now open for business after eight months.”
