The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested and detained a final-year student and new mother for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby in a bush in Akwanga.

SP Ramhan Nansel, the police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest in a statement to reporters on Thursday in Lafia. He added that the suspect would be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.

He said, “The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for a thorough investigation and prosecution.”

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the woman is a final-year National Certificate in Education student at the College of Education, Akwanga. She reportedly abandoned the newborn, who was wrapped in a cloth, in a bush near Hope Academy Primary School on AA Koto Street, Akwanga.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said the baby was found alive on Wednesday and the matter was reported to the police.

 The discovery of the abandoned baby has reportedly caused outrage among local residents, with many expressing shocks over the incident. (NAN)
