Student expelled over a snapchat photo

An alleged student of  Kansas state university has been expelled from school after posting  a photo of herself and a friend to her snapchat account.

The female student  identified as Paige Shoemaker was  reported to have posted the photo of her and her friend wearing a black clay mask with caption: “Feels good to finally be a nigga.”

The controversial photo

The photo got traction when another student of the university identified as Des. @JustDesmund tweeted Paige’s photo with the caption: "Welcome to Kansas State University. Where breakfast in the morning is some K-State Family with a side of Racism."

 

The school responded by posting two different letters on their website. one of the letter from the VP for Student Life and Dean of Students Pat Bosco  reads:

"I have become aware that one of our students posted a racially offensive photo today on social media and used one of the most derogatory words in the English language. This photo has students, faculty, staff and other members of the K-State family upset. It rightly should, as there is no place for racism at our university, regardless of what the intentions may have been. 

While the second from the interim Associate Provost for Diversity Zelia Wiley reads:

"On Sept. 15, the university received notice that a derogatory social message and photo was sent out via social media. The involved person is not currently enrolled at the university. It is our understanding the second individual in the photo is not associated with the university."

However Fusion reports that "KSU’s online student directory, Shoemaker is a pre-psychology sophomore; the listing appears to have since been deleted."

And the Sorority group Paige belonged to also disavow her. On their facebook page K-State Zeta Tau Alpha wrote that she is no longer a member and that " Her words and actions certainly do not reflect the values and principles of Zeta Tau Alpha."

Washington Post  reported that Paige apologised “I am truly sorry that I have offended so many people, I am the furthest thing from racist, I am an incredibly accepting person and would never do something to intentionally poke at a race. I understand that me having black friends doesn’t make it acceptable for me to use the word that I did. I have definitely learned to make sure I am more aware of my audience and to never use a derogatory term,” she said.

She also wrote an apology on the university facebook page
