The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) yesterday asked President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, form a better and strong economic team to revive the ailing economy. 
This was contained in a communiqué signed by the Secretary and Chairman of Communiqué Drafting Committee, Ali Abdullahi Lamma and Armstrong Ovie-Afabor respectively, at the end of its 28th National Convention Association in Abuja.
The communiqué reads in part, “That the federal government should set up a formidable economic team to liberate the country from the current economic quagmire and design a new face of social economic prosperity that will once again improve the living standard of students and the working class and strive to re-instate the middle class that has long been extinguished due to long standing anti- imperialist economic politics.”
The association called on states to allocate 26 per cent of their annual budgets to education as recommended by UNESCO for developing countries and commended Jigawa State for allocating 23 per cent of its total budget to education.
The students also urged government to honour the 2009 agreement it reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to avoid the proposed industrial action in October.
Aruna Kadiri from Uniben emerged as president during the convention, Oyedide Salam of OAU, senate president; Felix Attah from Unijos, vice president special duties; Shettima Umar of ATBU, vice president national affairs; Sunday Ogmu of NSUK, assistant secretary general while Ikechukwu Okorie of UniZik was elected as financial secretary.
