The award was the 11th in the series which the agency’s Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) conferred on the nation’s teenagers who excelled in quiz competitions that cover activities of the agency.
Speaking at the event, Director-General, NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii, said the programme was one of the agency’s public enlightenment programmes targeting the youth in the society in the eradication of fake and substandard regulated product campaign.
He said: “While employing high technology devices to track and treat counterfeits and counterfeiters, we deem it expedient to immunize our society against counterfeits by re-orientating our youths through activities of NCSC. The club is aimed at informing and educating members towards collaborating with NAFDAC on safeguarding the health of the nation.”
He said that circulation of fake products in the country was an enormous task for the agency, which he said necessitated catching the youth young.
In his remark, Chairman, Governing Board of NAFDAC, Prof John Ibu, urged NAFDAC to continue to explore all means through which its mandate could be maximally achieved.
While pledging his board’s support for the agency, Ibu appealed to parents and the youths to be agents of zero-tolerance to fake and substandard drugs, foods and other products being regulated by NAFDAC.
In the senior secondary school category, Akbapio Inimfon, an SSS 3 student of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, emerged overall national winner, followed by Igwe Ozioma of Alvana Model Secondary School, Owerri, Imo State, as Ikegbo Stanley Ogochukwu of St Paul’s Comprehensive Secondary School, Bauchi State, came third.
Azubike Chiamaka, a JSS 3 student of Federal Government Girls College, Owerri, Imo State, clinched first position in Junior Secondary School category.
She was followed by Adamu Yahaya of Nigerian Turkish International College, Kano, Kano State, while Alaba Danagogo of Charles Dale Memorial International School Port Harcourt, River State, came third.
Both Inimfon and Chiamaka also came first in the South-South senior and South-East junior categories, respectively.
