The National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS) has called on the Federal Government to zone the chairmanship of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Southwest.

NAOS National President, Olalere Benedict Adetunji, made the appeal in a statement, noting that since the establishment of Nigeria’s electoral body in 1964, no individual from the region has headed the commission.

According to the group, past chairmen of INEC and its predecessor bodies have come from the South-South, South-East, North-West, and North-East, leaving out the Southwest.

“Records show that the position has rotated among the South-South, South-East, North-West, and North-East regions, leaving the Southwest completely sidelined for over six decades.

“NAOS considers this a glaring imbalance and an injustice to the people of the region, who have consistently contributed to the democratic growth and stability of the country,” the statement signed by Amb. Olalere Benedict Adetunji, National President of NAOS, and Amb. Ajadi Ibrahim, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NAOS, said.

The association urged President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and other stakeholders to ensure that the next appointment reflects what it described as fairness and inclusion.
