The decision was taken at a Senate meeting held last Thursday (September 4), where a new academic calendar was drafted and adopted, after which it was circulated to relevant officers and units of the university.
The university has been on long vacation break since May 2014, to mark the end of the 2013/2014 academic session and lately some students have expressed worries over the prolonged break.
As the university calendar indicated before now, registration of newly admitted and returning students and the full commencement of academic activities for the 2014/2015 session are supposed to begin from September 15.
It may be recalled that in the 2013/2014 session, academic activities were obstructed in the university for over eight months, resulting from students’ protest over water scarcity as well as the 6-month old strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Students were hoping to cover up the periods that were shattered by the protest and ASUU strike in the 2014/2015 academic session, as they have been waiting anxiously to resume from the long vacation. Unfortunately their hopes have been dashed with the recent announcement of the postponement of resumption from September 15 to October 13, 2014.
