Nasarawa State University (NSUK) Keffi Law Clinic has secured bail relief for three suspects as part of efforts by the students in providing free legal services for the poor, vulnerable and indigent persons in the society.
The suspects, who were sent to prison on judicial remand, were Yiza Yough, Sunday Felix and Mutiu Segu who were jailed for different offences.
The head of the clinic and a final year law student of the institution, Anyiam-Mile Justin Ternenge, said Yiza Yough was charged with receiving stolen property, Sunday Felix was arrested for snatching a mobile phone in Mararaba and Segun was arrested for fighting.
He said the clinic quickly intervened and provided them with legal assistance which resulted in their speedy trial and granting of bail.
Commenting further on the activities of the Law Clinic, a member and 400-level law student, Anunihu Chiagoziem Bethel, said their aim was to provide free legal services to the poor and vulnerable people.
He said the Law Clinic is presently providing assistance to five inmates of the Keffi Medium Prisons and called on those whose fundamental human rights are being deprived to approach them at the Faculty of Law, Nasarawa State University Keffi for help, devoid of charges.
However, the Law Clinic has a Freedom of Information (FOI) Unit, charged with the responsibility of sensitizing the public about their legal rights and has taken the awareness campaign to several towns and villages in Nasarawa State, including Keffi, Mararaba and Kokona.
The NSUK Law Clinic was established in 2012 to expose NSUK law students to real legal practice with the hope of equipping them with requisite skills and values toward becoming competent lawyers.
